SOULPOWER
The best partnerships often come about by pure chance – that is definitely true for the newly formed partnership of Perry Louis (JazzCotech)and the Soulpower organisation . Perry and Pari met when Perry DJd for the late Lynn Collins at the Jazz Café in 2005.
Liking what he heard, the two P’s got chatting which ended in a booking for Perry to DJ at a Soulpower session in Hannover. They both found they shared a passion for all things Funk and Soul and had a dedication to ensure that proper Funk should be played to the people. Perry then introduced Pari to the music of Japanese Funk outfit Osaka Monorail led by super talented musical Arranger and Musician Ryo Nakata after a trip to Japan. Together, Perry and Pari then introduced Marva Whitney to Osaka Monorail leading on to Marva's first ever tour of Japan and the release of her first album in 30 years. The two friends are now joined by Ryo Nakata who has joined Soulpower as the Japanese representative.
Perry’s position as “the Man in Europe” was made official and he has since danced and DJd his way around half of the world alongside Soulpower represented artistes, such as Sweet Charles Sherrell, Martha High, Marva Whitney and Ramp. If you read up on Soulpower’s and Perry Louis’ history, it becomes some kind of destiny that the two should at some point meet up and join up. Starting off in early 2004 as a monthly soul party at the Palo Palo club in Hannover, Germany, Soulpower has grown into a globally operating project, from Europe’s most respected clubs to the hippest stages in Japan and Australia. Today, the organisation is based in Richmond, Virginia (for America and Australia), Tokyo (for Japan) and London (for Europe). Soulpower is the ultimate Soul / Funk party, a trip back to when Funk and style still mattered. Soulpower brings back the style and sound of an era that will never be forgotten. Perry Louis is probably best known as the leader of the world famous JazzCotech Dancers, with whom he has toured the world twice over, teaching and dancing alongside many greats on the international Jazz and JazzFunk scene. Together with JazzCotech, he has set up 3 successful club nights in London, most notably the popular Messin’ Around club night at the London Jazz Café in Camden which is now in its 12th year. A lover and collector of vinyl since his early teens, Perry progressed from pure dancing into DJing, promoting and producing Jazz, Funk and Soul music. Although most people associate him widely with Jazz, Perry’s first love will always be the Funk and particularly James Brown, whom he had the honour to support as a Dancer and a DJ on 4 occasions between 1997 and 2006

FAST FOOT SHUFFLE
JazzCotech Dancers talents do not start and end with dancing; when Perry met Saxophonist Dave O'Higgins in 1998, they immediately found a great rapport and mutual respect which resulted in the co-production of Fast Foot Shuffle in 2002. This was the very first time a Jazz-Fusion dancer co-produced a Jazz album and as a result, a rich energy exudes from the album's 14 tracks, inspired by JazzCotech Dancers fast paced intricacy and raw style of dance.
Following a 3-week, sell-out tour around the UK, Fast Foot Shuffle received rave reviews and has been called the soundtrack of the Jazz Dance scene. With Jazz at the heart,
Fast Foot Shuffle was made with the JazzCotech Dancers, musicians and hoofers/tap dancers (Hoofers is the term use for American style tap dancers) working together every step of the way, helping the fast Bop, Latin and deep Funk pump through the veins of the album. Although there are only six musicians, the rich complexities of Fast Foot Shuffle can easily dupe the audience into believing that there are more, when in fact those 'extra' musicians are the dancers themselves.
FUSION 4 ALL
Fusion 4 All was a highly successful project at the Royal Festival Hall in London in August 2000, organised and implemented by JazzCotech Dancers. The day comprised workshops in various types of dance, all of which come together in JazzCotech Dancers own Fusion Jazz Dance style. In addition there was a dance photo exhibition, art, dance and music workshops for children and a workshop on 'How to start a dance company'. The day ended with a showcase featuring the JazzCotech Dancers and the Brazilian band Siruis B.
MOVIN’ ON
Movin' On in August 2002 was built on the success of Fusion 4 All. The day consisted of workshops in Break, Capoeira, Contemporary Jazz, Lindy Hop, Jazz Tap and Street-Fusion Jazz Dance, both for adults and young people (12-17 year olds). There was T-shirt painting for the young ones, a record stall, an exhibition of dance paintings, and a discussion panel on'What it takes to make it in Jazz'.
In the Mood to Groove
We finished off the Southbank trilogy with NAME over the Easter weekend in March 2004. Like its pre-decessors, Name included free Dance workshops in Contemporary Jazz, Break, Lindy Hop and Street-Jazz Fusion for Adults and Kids. For those who wanted to build on their artistic rather than Dance skills, we laid on workshops in Dance painting and T-shirt paintings, with the opportunity for participants to enter their finished pieces into a competition. We also increased the performance ratio by performing ourselves and launching the JazzCotech Juniors Dance group with a storm breaking debut, showing that the future of Jazz Dance in the UK lies firmly in their hands – and feet! Another highlight was the live show by the incredible New Mastersounds, followed by a DJ set by our own Perry Louis to party out the day.
